Camera Tips: Shooting in Auto/under or over exposed

If you find that your image is either over or under exposed while shooting in "Auto", there is an easy and simple way to force your camera to change the exposure without having to tackle the manual mode.
Step 1: Switch your camera from the "Auto" mode (Auto) to the "Programmed" mode (P)
(NIKON Users)
Step 2: Locate the exposure compensation button (small button with the +/- signs).
Step 3: Push down on the button while rotating the wheel on the back of your camera either left or right to change your exposure.
Step 4: Use the + side to make your exposure lighter or the - side to make the exposure darker.
This is an exposure taken in "Auto" mode. It is under-exposed.
Step 5: Retake your image, play with the settings until you get the exposure you are looking for.
Step 6: Return the exposure compensation button to zero when finished.
Learning to shoot in manual will allow you to get the most out of your camera, contact me for information about one-on-one classes.

Affordable Photographer in Castle Rock, CO

Winter is the least popular season for family photos.  Fall holds the number one spot, everyone is looking for those fall colors just prior to their Christmas card, but I think you might be missing out on one of the most beautiful seasons to take photos.
There is just something so fresh and clean about photos taken in the snow, mix that with some stately evergreens and WOW! have you got yourself a beautiful photo.
Of course, that means more chilly temperatures, but a few simply precautions and you're sure to have a successful winter time shoot.

#1 - Ditch the dress shoes and opt for warm winter boots that will keep snow from finding its way into your shoes.
#2 Make sure your kiddos have lots of warm layers, cold kids are grumpy kids.
#3 Pay special attention to little hands and feet.

#4 Don't worry about that Christmas card, these are photos you will hang in your home year round and that you will cherish for a lifetime!
(and who says you can't send a New Year's card???  In March!)
