If you find that your image is either over or under exposed while shooting in "Auto", there is an easy and simple way to force your camera to change the exposure without having to tackle the manual mode.
Step 1: Switch your camera from the "Auto" mode (Auto) to the "Programmed" mode (P)
(NIKON Users)
Step 2: Locate the exposure compensation button (small button with the +/- signs).
Step 3: Push down on the button while rotating the wheel on the back of your camera either left or right to change your exposure.
Step 4: Use the + side to make your exposure lighter or the - side to make the exposure darker.
This is an exposure taken in "Auto" mode. It is under-exposed.
Step 5: Retake your image, play with the settings until you get the exposure you are looking for.
Step 6: Return the exposure compensation button to zero when finished.
